Well my girlfriend’s Dad bought another laptop, this time the HP Pavilion dv2910us. To his surprise he didn’t know it came with Windows Vista, so here i was again to save the day. I offered to install Windows XP for him and he immediately said “YES PLEASE EUNGG”. So I told him to order Windows XP from newegg and let me install it. When Windows XP arrived I popped it into the notebook and all of a sudden i saw the dreaded error “Internal hard disk drive not found”. This happens when you try to downgrade from Vista to XP, so the war begins. I went to the HP Live Chat support page and spoke to Allan who was the live tech here’s the convo we had :
Pigeon: anyone there?
Allan: Hello Alexander.
Allan: Welcome to HP Total Care. My name is Allan. How may I help you today?
Pigeon: Hi i have a Pavilion dv2910 and to my surprise it has the HORRIBLE vista OS
Pigeon: so I was able to get a copy of Windows XP installed it find but when i go to the drivers page
Pigeon: it doesnt have 80% of the XP drivers on the site
Allan: Yes, let me explain.
Pigeon: I could install Linux but I rather use XP for now
Allan: If you have an HP Pavilion or Compaq Presario consumer notebook PC that shipped with Windows Vista, you should not attempt to downgrade to Windows XP.
Allan: Changing the operating system will cause severe operational problems. Many of the components, such as sound, video, graphics, network connectivity, drives, recovery partition or other devices and peripherals, may have limited functionality, or may not work at all.
Pigeon: Then why have Windows XP drivers page then?
Pigeon: I dont want to write a horrible review of the Pavilion downgrading problems
Pigeon: when the site clearly says “Windows Xp Drivers” on the drivers page
Allan: I can understand your concern. But we do not have any tested information when windows XP is installed on dv2910us
I’m sure a lot of you have tried downgrading from Vista to XP but was unable to do so. Well ladies and gentlemen, I am here to save the day! I will give you a preview step on how I was able to install Windows XP with all the necessary drivers. It was not easy at all but I will make it easy for you.
Part 1
Ok first step is Installing Windows XP. As stated before whenever you try to install a fresh copy of Windows XP it will give you the “Internal Hard Disk Not Found” for this you need to make a bootable copy of your XP with a file called “ACHI drivers”. You can google it I’m sure you can find it. After you have found the ACHI drivers you need to download a program called nLite this program will let you make a bootable XP cd with the installed ACHI Drivers. After you have made the new XP CD insert it into your notebook and restart. The windows XP CD will finally read and now you can install XP.
Part 2
Now that you have installed XP you want to add the drivers for sound, network, graphics, modem, card reader, etc etc.
For sound you can google old drivers for the Pavilion XP series. When you have found it and try to install it on the notebook it will give you an error. Don’t worry, what you do is this:
1. Click on run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter.
2. Look for Sound and Gaming controllers and right click on it and update drivers
3. Click on install from specific location and Don’t search I will choose the driver to install.
4. Scroll down to Sound and game controllers and click on Have Disk.
5. Browse to C:/swsetup/ and the sound drivers file you extracted (SP34200) click on the inf file and continue on installing the rest.
Since this might take too long you can always visit our forum and i will give you DETAILED instructions on how to do everything STEP by STEP.
Well after I installed EVERYTHING i went back to the HP Online Chat tech and here is the convo:

Dorothy: Hello Alexander.
Dorothy: Welcome to HP Total Care for Pavilion Notebooks. My name is Dorothy. How may I assist you today?
Pigeon: Hi i was here before asking about installing Windows XP and WIndows XP drivers for my Pavilion dv2910us they told me it wasn’t possible due to hardware configuration
Dorothy: Yes, let me explain in this regard.
Dorothy: HP doesn’t recommend you installing other retail version Operating System on the notebook with modifying the preinstalled Operating System shipped with the notebook.
Pigeon: Why is that?
Pigeon: Windows Vista is horrible
Dorothy: As HP will only test the notebook with preinstalled Operating System, installing retail version Operating System will cause the device drivers and the applications not work on the notebook.
Pigeon: Well i just wanted to add that I was able to install Windows XP and was able to install the following drivers: Sound, WLAN, Ethernet,Modem,Intel Graphics,Card Reader,Webcam. Now it’s running super fast I just wanted to confirm with you that YES it is possible to run WIndows XP on the Pavilion dv2910us
Pigeon: no hardware problems at all..
Dorothy: I am afraid to say that it is not possible to add windows XP in the dv2910us notebook.
Dorothy: Let me know, did you created recovery cds for your notebook?
Pigeon: I was able to extract the ACHI files into the windows XP CD and made a bootable ISO file
This session is not yet active or is no longer active.
She closed the chat connection! Unbelievable! Why do they tell people it’s impossible when it is possible. You shouldn’t lie to your customers. Also why would you even have a Windows XP Drivers page when they clearly state that “ITS NOT POSSIBLE”? Some people hate Windows Vista and they want to just run Windows XP. Well Folks I am here to help so like i said before Feel free to visit our computer related issues forum and ask me to help you install Windows XP on your Vista notebook.
